Frida Heart by Megan Whisner Quinlan

Megan Whisner Quinlan shares how she creates this mixed media art journal page using Dina Wakley MEdia Products. Follow along, as Megan encourages you to channel your inner Frida and create a bright, vibrant journal page.

Instructions

Frida Kahlo was one of the most prominent painters of her time. She was famous for the passion and introspection she captured in her paintings. Dina Wakley’s, Homage to Frida stamp set capture’s Frida’s heart and soul and leaves many options for inspiration. Follow along to add some Frida inspired art to your journal pages.

Frida Heart Step 1

Step 1: Spray your journal page with Fuschia, Turquoise, and Cheddar to begin your background. Let the colors mix together and saturate the page, to create some “cosmic” effects.

Frida Heart Step 2

Step 2: Stamp your chosen images from the Homage to Frida stamp set onto white cardstock. Stamp several extra flowers for your heart.

Frida Heart Step 3

Step 3: Spray a piece of white cardstock with Turquoise Gloss Spray for your heart background. Allow to dry.

Frida Heart Step 4

Step 4: Draw a connecting loose body shape to your Frida image. Cut out stamped images.

Frida Heart Step 5

Step 5: Color the images to your liking with Scribble Sticks and then blend them out with water and a paintbrush. If you leave more white within and around the borders, you will be able to see them better on your colorful background. Trace and cut a heart out of your sprayed Turquoise page. Then cut your heart in half to create “doors”. Trim bottom so it will be squared with the bottom of your page.

Frida Heart Step 6

Step 6: Using the Mini Ink Blending Tool with Foam, stencil onto the back of your heart doors with Fuschia acrylic paint. Use some White Gesso to tone down the stenciling, and grunge it up a bit.

Frida Heart Step 7

Step 7: Fold the outer edges of your heart (about .5” wide) so that they will be able to open and close as doors. Glue them down over your glued Frida image. Glue her heart image in her center. Here, journaling was used to add to her dress, but you may decorate her gown however you feel inspired.
