Exaggerate Normal Art Journal by Renae Davis

Get spooky and kooky and into the Halloween spirit with this Dylusions art journal spread by Renae Davis. Follow along with Renae as she pairs the bright palette of Dylusions Ink Sprays with the unique artwork from Dylusions stamps and collage sheets to piece together this haunted house spread just in time for the holiday.

Instructions

Dylusions + Halloween = the perfect combination. Could this project have been about a cliche pumpkin? Or treat bags? Or even a cute little monster? It could have… but haunted houses are way more fun and definitely in the Dylusional realm. Let’s get batty!

Exaggerate Normal Art Journal Step 1

Step 1: In the large Dylusions Creative Journal (this paper is the BEST for ink spraying), spray a generous amount of the Dylusions Ink Spray cocktail mix of Crushed Grape, Laidback Lilac, After Midnight, Balmy Night. Use the Distress Sprayer filled with water to help blend the mix. Repeat with multiple layers if needed to achieve full color depth. Let dry completely.

Step 2: Place the 9 x12 Dylusions Cobweb stencil over top of one half of the journal page. Spray a generous amount of water through the stencil with the Distress Sprayer. Allow the water to sit a few seconds to activate the ink on the page. Place a paper towel over top of the stencil to soak up the excess liquid. Press down firmly. Carefully lift the paper towel and set aside to dry (save for later for a background or to die cut embellishments). Repeat the process for the second half of the journal page. Let dry completely.

Step 3: On the right side of the page - design a haunted house. I made this one with scrap black cardstock and scrapbook paper along with some stickers and the Dylusions Acrylic Paint Pens. It can be as wonky and discombobulated as you want it to be! If you don’t feel comfortable making your own, find one from a coloring book or print one offline.

I also added a ginormous spooky moon behind the house with scrap marble paper I made with Dylusions Ink Spray and shaving cream (see one of my previous blog posts for that tutorial).  I darkened the edges with Ranger Jet Black Archival Ink and an Ink Blending Tool.

Step 4: The Dylusions Collage Sheets are the perfect addition to any Halloween page - they’re weirdly unique and don’t even need a Halloween costume. I added this tall looking redhead (its me of course!) with an odd little fellow to the left of her for her friend. The giant pet spider needed something to play with, so I added a “fresh” head to add to its web. You can mix and match anything you want with the collage sheets - there are more than enough options to choose from.

Step 5: My favorite stamp set ever that Dyan designed is this particular mushroom set. I stamped the mushrooms with Ranger Jet Black Archival Ink and colored them with the Dylusions Ink Sprays in Mushy Peas, Crushed Grape, Pink Flamingo, Balmy Night, Tangerine Dream. I also added some details with the Dylusions Acrylic Paint Pens.

The quote pictured here is from the Dylusions Bigger Back Chat Sticker set.

Exaggerate Normal Art Journal Step 6

Step 6: It would not be a haunted house without cobwebs, right? Add some of the cobwebs from Tim Holtz Stamp Set: Tangled Webs using Ranger White Embossing Powder. Just a few of these really makes this dark layout P-O-P!

Around the entire border of the layout, I added Ranger Black Embossing Powder with the Distress Embossing Dabber. Add some Stickles Glitter Glue in the mix if you want it to sparkle.

Step 7: Complete the layout with a few finishing touches…small bat and/or spider stickers, paint splatters, and possibly even more spider webs. Maybe a monster hand or some eyeballs here and there - whatever you want to make your house look as spooky or weird as you want! There’s no right or wrong here! I even added some neon flamingos and palm trees because it could be a haunted beach house if we want it to. Why not?

**The smokestacks are the bottom of the mushrooms from the other page**

Exaggerate Normal Art Journal Step 8

It’s Halloween. I hope you have been inspired to get your spook on. We are all artists in some way and it’s ok to be weird, wonky, crazy, abnormal —AND— it’s more than ok to flaunt those traits. The world needs more weird and not just from Halloween. BE every bit as Dylusional as you can be! (Stay safe though!) (:
